Ong Shunmugam
The reinvented cheongsams from this womenswear label are perfect for ladies who want to embrace their cultural roots with discernment this Chinese New Year.
Founded in 2010 by Priscilla Shunmugam, the Ong Shunmugam label is a combination of her parents’ surnames. At the core of it is a desire to bridge the traditional and contemporary to create beautiful, flattering clothes.
The cheongsams in particular adhere to the design aesthetics, fusing modern elements like colourblocking and peplums with specially sourced Asian textiles and comfortable fabrics such as silk and organic crepe.
For example, Tsu-Yen features a flare skirt with pockets to boot, Nishita creates a slimming effect with the colourblocking pattern, while Su Lin’s peplum allows you to hide that post-festive bulge. We say it’s certainly time to do away with those staid and restrictive cheongsams, seeing how these Ong Shunmugam ones actually look fun and flirty, without losing an iota of femininity and elegance.
