Mao’s Last Dancer
Directed by Oscar-nominated Australian Bruce Beresford, Mao’s Last Dancer opens the Singapore International Film Festival 2010. SIFF is whetting film appetites with its strong choice for its opening film this year.
Mao’s Last Dancer depicts the true story of Li Cunxin, a Chinese-trained ballet dancer. As a young boy, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village when he was 11 years old by Madame Mao’s cultural delegates. He was brought to Beijing to to train in ballet.
In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman. Two years later, he defected his country and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.
Adapted from Li’s 2003 autobiography, this 2009 feature film made its screen debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2009 and had premiere screenings in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.
